ZION LUTHERAN SCHOOL AND PRESCHOOL APRIL
ZION LUTHERAN SCHOOL AND PRESCHOOL APRIL 2017
A GROWING CHURCH, SCHOOL AND PRESCHOOL
Each Sunday there are new faces at Zion. By this time of year, we have become familiar with all of our Zion Preschool and School families. Some of our families are active members in congregations other than Zion, and some parents have expressed an interest in becoming members of Zion Lutheran Church.
If you have no church home of your own, and would like to become better acquainted with the teachings of Zion Lutheran Church, or if you are interested in becoming a member of our congregation, you would be asked to visit with Pastor Schwan. Informational classes are available on Wednesday evenings, or if this is not convenient for you, there is a possibility of setting up an individual instruction time.
Please remember that all of our families at Zion Lutheran School and Preschool are invited to worship with us each Saturday at 5:30PM or Sunday at 8AM or 10:45AM. Sunday School and Bible Classes for all ages are offered from 9:30AM - 10:30AM.
On Sunday April 8, Zion will be having a “Journey to the Cross”. This will take place from 9am until noon. Participants will be able to take part in different stations, try some foods, and even see a donkey! This will be a memorable experience for all!
There will be several opportunities to worship during Holy Week.
April 13 - Maundy Thursday - Holy Communion
Services at 10AM & 6PM
April 14 - Good Friday
Services at 10AM & 6PM
April 16– Easter Sunday

We invite you to join us for worship!
SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR PARENTS AND VOLUNTEERS
Milo Winter and the New Horizon Band will present a concert on Tuesday, April 4, at 8:30AM in the MPR. We would like to take this opportunity to invite all of our parents and volunteers to join us! Hopefully this event will be a way to say “Thank You” for all that you do at Zion School and Preschool. We appreciate our parents, grandparents, friends and all who volunteer their time to make our school such a wonderful place.
Following the concert, light refreshments will be served to our volunteers and to the band members. Please plan on joining us as we say “Thank You” for volunteering your time and talents!
SPECIAL EVENTS IN APRIL
Students in grades 1-5 will present a Spring Concert on Friday evening, April 28, at 7PM in the MPR. You’ll be able to enjoy their singing and instrumental selections led by Mrs. Long. Please join us that evening. Children will meet in their classrooms at 6:45PM.
South Dakota Assessments
The State of South Dakota mandates testing at certain levels for children in state accredited schools. Zion’s fifth graders will be taking the South Dakota Science Assessment. Students throughout the state began testing April 3, 2017. Our 5th grade students will be taking this test during the week of April 10.
Students in grades 3-5 will be taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment after Easter break.
These tests are the State’s assessment system for accountability used to measure student proficiency and adequate yearly progress in South Dakota Schools. This means that your child’s scores provide a comparison of his or her performance to that of thousands of other students who took the test under similar conditions. The results help our teachers to plan lessons that build upon what our children already know and encourage progress in areas our children have not yet mastered. It is important to understand that no one “passes” or “fails” this test.
These types of tests can give only certain kinds of information about how an individual child is doing in science, math, and language arts. To get a more complete picture, parents also need to consider other important factors including how your child does with daily class work; other tests the teacher gives, homework, and other activities.
Test results for the South Dakota Science Assessment and the Smarter Balanced Assessments will be sent to our school after State testing is completed. Parents will also receive a letter concerning results.
